What Is Utility Potholing?
Utility potholing — also called vacuum excavation or hydrovac test pitting — is the process of using pressurized water or air combined with a powerful vacuum to excavate small, precise test holes over located utility lines. The goal is to physically expose the utility so its exact position, depth, size, material, and condition can be visually verified and documented. Unlike mechanical excavation, potholing does not risk damaging the utility during the process.
Potholing vs. Utility Locating: What's the Difference?
Utility locating (using EM and GPR) gives you the approximate horizontal position and estimated depth of buried utilities. Potholing gives you verified, measured depth and visual confirmation of exactly what's there. For most projects, utility locating is sufficient. But in certain situations, the extra certainty of potholing is worth the additional cost — and in some cases, it's required.
When Potholing Is Necessary
Potholing is typically required or strongly recommended when a proposed excavation will cross or run parallel to a high-risk utility (gas, high-voltage electric, water main), when existing utility records show conflicting or unreliable depth information, when the project requires SUE Level A quality data for engineering design, when boring or directional drilling will cross a known utility, when utilities have been previously repaired and as-built records may not reflect current conditions, or when the project owner or engineer requires verified utility depths as a project deliverable.
The Cost-Benefit of Potholing
The cost of a utility pothole is typically a few hundred dollars. The cost of striking an undiscovered gas line or high-voltage electrical conduit can be catastrophic — in terms of worker safety, project delays, repair costs, and legal liability. For critical crossings and high-risk excavation areas, potholing is one of the most cost-effective insurance policies a contractor can buy.
